Troubleshooting

Issue: Unexpected “Do you want to save this file?” prompt when installing the JRE

Solution: Occasionally the file downloaded via Internet Explorer from Sun's Java download site is not an executable; the cause for this is unknown. Install Java again from the main page at a later time or from an alternate browser such as Mozilla Firefox.

Issue: The file I download when installing the JRE is not an .exe, and Windows doesn't know what to do with it

Solution: See above.

Issue: “Bad installation. Error invoking Java VM” error during installation

Solution: Please ensure that you are logged into your computer with administrative rights. Then install the Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2 again via the “Download & Install Java Web Start” link on the main page, or via http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html.

You may need to uninstall your current installation of the Java Runtime Environment before installing again:

  1. Open the Control Panel from the Start menu
  2. Open Add or Remove Programs.
An alphabetical listing of all the programs installed on your computer appears.
  3. Locate Java on the list and click Remove:
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts.
  5. Repeat for any additional installations of Java that you wish to remove.
  6. Install the Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2 again from the main page, or via http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html.

Issue: Java Web Start begins but nothing happens

Solution: The Java Web Start cache may be corrupted, and you need to clear it. To clear your Java Web Start cache:

  1. Double click the Java Web Start icon on your desktop to launch the Java Web Start Application Manager
  2. In the Java Web Start Application Manager, select File -> Preferences
  3. In the Advanced tab, click Clear Folder
  4. Quit the Java Web Start Application Manager
  5. Launch the Data Validator again via the desktop icon or from the main page

Issue: Cannot load resources

Solution: This is likely to happen in a network environment in which there is a firewall between your computer and the internet, and if Java Web Start has not been configured with the right proxy settings.

To set the proxies manually:

  1. Obtain the name and port number of your proxy server from your network administrator.
  2. Open Java Web Start from the icon on your desktop.
  3. Select File -> Preferences
  4. Under the General tab, click Manual.
  5. Type in the proxy server’s HTTP name and port.

Issue: Security Warning window appears during installation of the Data Validator

Solution: This is secure and safe, and the prompt is expected. The Data Validator requires your permission in order to create files on your hard drive (such as the log files explaining the errors in your roster files).
